Container and collection rules vary by building size and collection method. For residential properties with one to nine units, DSNY’s required-bin transition is especially important.
What the owner needs to manage

- Provide secure, lidded containers of the permitted size and keep storage and collection areas clean.
- Separate trash, recycling, and organics according to current DSNY rules and teach residents the building process.

Citywide residential organics separation became mandatory April 1, 2025. DSNY says one- to nine-unit properties must use official NYC Bins beginning June 2026; verify current ordering and enforcement details.
